From a little in-home help to more social support, Silvia Olival organises it all. And today, we had the pleasure of asking her a few questions!
Take a minute to hear from Silvia as she shares about the care services – and genuine care – on offer at Angus Bristow Village.
How would you describe your role? What is a ‘Care Facilitator’?
Silvia: As a Care Facilitator at Baptistcare at Home - Southwest Sydney, my role revolves around coordinating and managing care and services for our clients in the SWS, MacArthur, and Wollondilly areas.
Our goal is to deliver high-quality care that allows our clients to maintain their independence in the comfort of their homes.
What does that involve?
Silvia: Oh, lots of things!
From showering, cleaning, and shopping to social support, lawn mowing, home maintenance, allied health, transport, respite, and our specialised Dementia Support program – we cover a wide range of services.
As with everyone at BaptistCare, building genuine connections with our clients and their families is at the heart of what I do.Our whole team collaborates closely with everyone. We really try to get to know and understand each resident, working to develop innovative strategies that promote health, well-being, and independence.
My personal approach to care is centred on discovering what's possible in our clients' lives. It’s all about empowering them to live well, surrounded by their loved ones, community, and cherished memories.
How long have you been in this role?
Silvia: I've had the privilege of being part of the BaptistCare family for over nine and a half years.
I started as a Care Worker in 2014, working one-on-one with clients in their homes.Over the years, I've grown within the organisation, transitioning to a roster scheduler in 2018. Then, in 2019, I embraced the role of a Care Facilitator, deepening my commitment to providing compassionate and personalised care.
What led you to choose this job? What do you enjoy about it?
Silvia: Knowing that I can positively impact the world, helping people with their care, gives me a profound sense of purpose. Through this job, I've had meaningful experiences that will leave lasting impressions on my life and those I care for. I especially cherish the time spent with clients, listening to their stories and learning about their experiences and history.
What does an average day look like for you?
Silvia: Every day as a Care Facilitator is a new adventure! My primary goal is to provide high-quality care and services that empower our clients to maintain their independence.
A typical day may involve setting up new clients, conducting yearly reviews, participating in case conferences and follow-ups, attending various meetings, and working on building new partnerships. By utilising these approaches, I can ensure open communication and collaboration towards shared goals, benefiting the residents of Angus Bristow Village under our care.
What would you say to anyone considering joining Angus Bristow Village?
Silvia: If you're considering purchasing a property, Angus Bristow Village is an excellent choice!
It’s in such a fantastic area, close to shops, golf clubs, popular restaurants, cafes, the Australian Botanic Gardens… It’s got everything next door! It’s also got a great range of health professionals and services nearby.
Spending time at Angus Bristow Village, you feel a strong sense of community, and you can really see the low-maintenance lifestyle. Residents have ample opportunities to interact and connect through on-site community rooms and engaging social activities, all without feeling like they're living in each other's pockets. I’d recommend it to anyone!
Any other tips you'd like to share?
Silvia: If you're thinking of moving to a retirement village, consider it as a fresh start. Try taking a fresh perspective and treat yourself to new things, too! Moving into a new home with new furniture can create an exciting fresh start and a new chapter in your life.
Of course, keep items with sentimental value, but don't be afraid to let go of other things and start fresh. Buy a new sofa setting, kitchen table, whatever you like – it’ll save on moving costs too!
