A retirement village is a busy, vibrant place, and it takes a special kind of person to ensure everything runs smoothly. Lucky for our residents, Angus Bristow has Matthew Elhosni - our friendly Village Manager.

Whether you spot him in his office or strolling around the village, Matt’s always ready to lend a helping hand or listening ear. If you ever need a chat, you can drop him an email, reach out through reception, or swing by his office any time! Today, we’ve done just that – and asked a few questions while we were there!

Meet Matt, our Village Manager!

Matthew Elhosni, Village Manager

What does a typical day at Angus Bristow look like for you?

Matt: A typical day at Angus Bristow is filled with administrative duties, and other general business responsibilities… but mostly I spend my time interacting with the residents! A lot of people just want to have a chat!
My door is always open for them – and if I’m busy elsewhere, Elvira [our Customer Service Officer] is right next door. The residents are at the heart of our community, so we always ensure the doors are open for a chat or just a friendly conversation. We want everyone to feel welcome.
There’s always someone to talk to.

How did you come to work at Angus Bristow?

Matt: After a nine-month break between jobs, I was on the lookout for my next career step. I saw the advertisement for Angus Bristow and decided to apply. The sense of community that the village exudes attracted me the most.
Community is more than just a buzzword here; it's something we live and breathe every day.

What do you like most about working at Angus Bristow?

Matt: The best part of working here is the balance between caring for our community and managing the challenges of running a business. While we take our responsibilities seriously, we also create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
In other organisations I’ve worked for, it’s just all about the business – but there’s a difference here! Angus Bristow is all about living your values and genuinely connecting.

In your time here, is there a favourite memory or highlight you can share?

Matt: Oh, there are too many good memories to talk about!
I’m a very laid-back village manager, and I’m genuine. I’m not one person at work and a different person at home. And I think that resonates with the residents in the village. We have a good time! I love a chat. I love a joke. I love banter! I have a lot of in-jokes with different residents. So, we enjoy ourselves! And that foundation means that we can have serious conversations and achieve good things together, because we have genuine relationships.

What's your number one piece of advice for anyone retiring?

Matt: Let go, relax, and retire! Take the leap and embrace the whole retirement lifestyle. Here, it’s different to running a high-maintenance house. You don’t need to worry about the little details, we’re here to help with all of it. We love to hear your ideas and collaborate with you on things, but don't hesitate to enjoy your life and let us handle the rest.
We’re not here to let you down: we're here to ensure you have the best retirement experience.

Have you had conversations with residents about this advice?

Matt: Yes, and it's heartening to see residents who initially wanted to be more involved in minute aspects of the village gradually embrace the idea of letting go. Trusting us with the details allows them to focus on enjoying life - and building a strong and genuine relationship with the community!

Any other tips you'd like to share?

Matt: If you're thinking of moving to a retirement village, consider it as a fresh start. Try taking a fresh perspective and treat yourself to new things, too! Moving into a new home with new furniture can create an exciting fresh start and a new chapter in your life.
Of course, keep items with sentimental value, but don't be afraid to let go of other things and start fresh. Buy a new sofa setting, kitchen table, whatever you like – it’ll save on moving costs too!
